Frosterley Marble Skull

Weighs 38.7 grams
Measures 35mm x 25mm

Frosterley Marble
This stone is found near the small village of Frosterley in County Durham, Northern England.

Although it is called a marble, it is in fact a black Limestone that contains fossils of 325 million year old Horn Corals. When they died, their skeletons collected on the sea floor and were covered in a substance, which hardened into dark grey limestone.

The corals are now visible as white shapes that show the internal structure of their skeletons in elaborate detail.

Harehope Quarry, just outside Frosterley in Weardale has been quarried for over 700 years and the “Marble” has been used in many religious buildings throughout England including the pillars of Durham Cathedral.

This stone is not easy to polish, as the corals are a different hardness to the surrounding Limestone.

This beautiful skull has been hand carved to reveal the stunning detail within the coral fossil.
