Tanzanite is a member of the Zoisite family. It is a calcium aluminum silicate mineral with a hardness of 6.5 - 7 and an orthorhombic crystal system. The colour range for Tanzanite is blue to blue-violet with some crystals golden to brownish yellow. First discovered in 1967 in Tanzania and named after the country of its discovery. This crystal is well formed and is a totally natural example (not heat treated), from Block B, Merelani, Tanzania
