Can Crystals Really Affect Our Energy?
Science, Intention and the Experience of Crystal Healing
In our first two articles, we explored some fascinating questions.
We began with The Mystery of 3, 6 and 9, looking at Tesla, numbers, vibration and the patterns that have fascinated people for generations.
Then we asked Do Crystals Really Have a Frequency?, taking a closer look at vibration, resonance and the remarkable physical properties of crystals — particularly Quartz.
But there is another question that perhaps gets even closer to the heart of crystal healing:
Can crystals really affect our energy?
If you have ever worked with crystals, you may already have an answer based upon your own experience.
Perhaps you have picked up a particular crystal and immediately felt drawn to it.
Perhaps one stone seems calming while another feels energising.
Perhaps you have used a crystal during meditation and noticed that your experience changes when you hold it.
But what exactly is happening?
Is the crystal physically changing something within us?
Is it influencing an energetic field that science has yet to understand?
Or could there be other explanations for the experiences people have when working with crystals?
The answer may be more complicated — and more interesting — than any of these possibilities on their own.
What do we actually mean by “energy”?
The word energy is used constantly in the world of crystal healing.
We talk about the energy of a crystal.
We talk about raising our vibration.
We talk about clearing negative energy.
We talk about energetic protection and balancing.
But energy has a very precise meaning in science.
In physics, energy is the capacity to do work. It appears in many different forms, including thermal, chemical, electrical, mechanical and electromagnetic energy.
Our bodies themselves involve numerous measurable forms of energy and electrical activity.
The heart produces electrical signals.
The brain produces measurable electrical activity.
Our nervous system communicates using electrochemical signals.
Our muscles contract through electrical and chemical processes.
So the human body is unquestionably an active physical system.
But does that mean a crystal can alter this energy simply by being held?
That is where we need to be careful.
The electrical human body
One of the most fascinating things about the human body is that electricity is already part of our biology.
Every heartbeat is associated with electrical activity.
This is why an electrocardiogram, or ECG, can record the electrical activity of the heart.
The brain also produces measurable electrical activity, which can be recorded using an electroencephalogram, or EEG.
Nerve cells communicate through changes in electrical potential across their membranes.
None of this is particularly controversial.
It is established biology.
And it is one reason why the language of “energy” can sometimes sound scientifically convincing when it is used in crystal healing.
There really is electricity and electrical activity within us.
But we should not automatically assume that this means crystals are interacting with those systems in the way sometimes claimed.
Do crystals interact with the body's energy?
There is currently no established scientific evidence demonstrating that healing crystals can specifically alter the body's electrical, magnetic or biochemical systems in a way that produces the therapeutic effects sometimes claimed for them.
That is an important statement.
It doesn't mean that someone cannot have a meaningful experience while holding a crystal.
It means that we shouldn't confuse personal experience with established physical mechanism.
The distinction becomes especially important when crystals are described as treating medical conditions.
Crystals should never be presented as a replacement for appropriate medical care, diagnosis or treatment.
But this still leaves us with a fascinating question.
If a crystal isn't scientifically proven to alter our body's energy, why can the experience of working with one sometimes feel so powerful?
The power of attention
One possible answer begins with something surprisingly simple:
attention.
Where we place our attention can change our experience.
Think about what happens when you spend several minutes concentrating on your breathing.
Your breathing may slow.
Your awareness of your body may increase.
The constant stream of thoughts may become quieter.
You may become more aware of sensations that you normally ignore.
Nothing magical has necessarily happened.
You have simply changed where your attention is directed.
A crystal can provide a physical object upon which to focus that attention.
Its colour.
Its shape.
Its texture.
Its weight.
Its temperature.
All of these things give the mind something concrete to notice.
And when that attention is combined with stillness and intention, the experience can become surprisingly powerful.
The crystal as an anchor
Imagine that you choose a piece of Smokey Quartz because you associate it with grounding.
You hold it in your hand.
You sit somewhere quiet.
You take several slow breaths.
For the next ten minutes, you focus on feeling more settled and present.
The crystal becomes associated with that experience.
The next time you hold the same piece of Smokey Quartz, your mind may remember what you were doing previously.
You may naturally begin to slow down again.
The stone has become an anchor.
The crystal hasn't necessarily changed your body through an unknown physical frequency.
Instead, it has become part of a repeated pattern involving attention, memory, intention and behaviour.
That doesn't make the experience meaningless.
Quite the opposite.
It shows how powerful our relationship with objects can become.
Intention may be more important than we realise
Intention is one of the most important ideas in crystal healing.
Before working with a crystal, many people decide what they want to focus upon.
It might be:
- calm
- confidence
- protection
- emotional balance
- self-compassion
- grounding
- clarity
- spiritual awareness
The crystal then becomes a physical reminder of that intention.
This can be particularly useful because intentions are otherwise very easy to forget.
We may decide in the morning that we want to remain calm throughout the day.
Then the phone rings.
An email arrives.
Something goes wrong.
We become frustrated.
The intention disappears.
But if we carry a crystal associated with calmness, seeing or touching it can provide a moment of reconnection.
The crystal reminds us.
That may be one of the most useful roles a crystal can play.
Why does one crystal feel different from another?
This is where things become particularly interesting.
Many people who work with crystals describe very different experiences with different stones.
Amethyst may feel calming.
Citrine may feel uplifting.
Smokey Quartz may feel grounding.
Rose Quartz may feel gentle.
Black Tourmaline may be associated with protection.
Are these differences caused by measurable frequencies?
We don't currently have good scientific evidence demonstrating that they are.
But there are many other factors that can influence our experience.
The crystals look different.
They feel different in the hand.
They have different colours, textures, densities and shapes.
They have different histories and traditions associated with them.
And perhaps most importantly:
we have different expectations of them.
The fascinating role of expectation
Expectation can influence experience in ways that are much more powerful than we sometimes realise.
If you are told that a particular crystal is traditionally associated with calmness, you may pay more attention to moments of calm when holding it.
If you are told that another crystal is energising, you may become more aware of feelings of alertness or enthusiasm.
This doesn't necessarily mean that someone is imagining their experience.
It means that the brain is actively interpreting what is happening.
Our expectations, memories and beliefs influence what we notice.
This is one of the reasons placebo research is so interesting.
What does the placebo effect actually mean?
The word placebo is sometimes used dismissively.
People may say:
“It was only a placebo.”
But the science is more complicated.
Expectation and context can influence how people experience symptoms and wellbeing.
A person's beliefs about a treatment can affect their experience of receiving it.
This does not mean that every positive experience is imaginary.
It means that the circumstances surrounding an experience can have real effects on perception and behaviour.
A 2025 randomised controlled study involving 138 adults investigated whether Rose Quartz could specifically reduce anxiety compared with a visually matched placebo crystal.
The study found reductions in anxiety among participants who already believed in crystal healing, but there was no significant difference between the Rose Quartz and placebo groups.
The researchers therefore found results consistent with expectancy and conditioning rather than a specific effect from the crystal itself.
For crystal enthusiasts, this research may initially sound like bad news.
I don't think it necessarily is.
What if the experience itself matters?
Imagine that someone holds a crystal every evening for ten minutes.
During those ten minutes, they:
- put their phone away
- sit quietly
- breathe slowly
- reflect on their day
- focus on something positive
- allow themselves to stop rushing
After several weeks, they feel calmer.
What produced that change?
Was it the crystal?
Was it the breathing?
Was it the quiet time?
Was it the expectation?
Was it the ritual?
Was it the combination of all of these things?
Science may not give us a simple answer.
And perhaps we don't always need one.
The important thing is to avoid claiming something has been scientifically proven when it hasn't.
At the same time, we shouldn't automatically dismiss an experience simply because we cannot identify one specific mechanism.
Crystals and ritual
There is another word that deserves more attention:
ritual.
Ritual doesn't have to mean something complicated or religious.
A ritual can simply be a repeated action that carries meaning.
Lighting a candle before meditation can be a ritual.
Making a cup of tea before bed can become a ritual.
Writing in a journal each morning can become a ritual.
Holding a particular crystal before meditation can become a ritual.
The repeated action tells the mind:
This is my time to stop.
That transition can be valuable.
The crystal becomes part of the doorway between ordinary activity and intentional attention.
Can crystals change our energy indirectly?
Perhaps this is a more useful question than asking whether crystals physically alter our energy.
A crystal may influence what we do.
And what we do can influence how we feel.
If holding a crystal reminds us to breathe more slowly, that matters.
If it reminds us to pause before reacting, that matters.
If it encourages meditation, reflection or mindfulness, that matters.
If it reminds us to be kinder to ourselves, that matters.
In that sense, a crystal may influence our experience indirectly.
Not because we have demonstrated that the stone is transmitting a healing frequency into the body, but because the stone has become part of a meaningful pattern of behaviour.
But what about the energetic perspective?
For many crystal healers, this explanation does not tell the whole story.
There is a long-standing tradition of describing crystals as having their own energetic qualities.
Different stones are associated with different chakras, emotional states, spiritual practices and forms of healing.
Many practitioners believe that crystals interact with a subtle energy field around and within the body.
This is a spiritual framework rather than an established scientific model.
Science has not currently demonstrated the existence of the subtle energy fields described in many crystal healing traditions.
That doesn't mean we need to dismiss the tradition.
It simply means that we should describe it accurately.
We can say:
“Crystal healers traditionally believe…”
rather than:
“Science has proved…”
That small difference is important.
Experience and evidence can exist alongside each other
There is sometimes an assumption that we must choose one side.
Either crystals work exactly as traditional crystal healers describe them, or the entire experience must be meaningless.
I don't believe the choice is that simple.
Science is extremely good at investigating measurable physical phenomena.
Personal experience is something else.
If someone says:
“Holding this crystal during meditation helps me feel calmer.”
that is a statement about their personal experience.
It doesn't automatically become a scientific claim.
Likewise, if someone says:
“This crystal cures anxiety because it vibrates at a particular frequency.”
that is a scientific claim and requires scientific evidence.
Knowing the difference allows us to remain both open-minded and honest.
Perhaps crystals influence us through relationship
One of the things I have found particularly interesting after many years of working with crystals is how personal our relationship with them can become.
A crystal can remind us of a person.
A particular stone may have been given to us at an important time in our lives.
Another may have been with us during a difficult period.
A crystal we bought because we were drawn to its colour may eventually become one of our most meaningful possessions.
Over time, the stone accumulates associations.
It becomes part of our story.
And perhaps this is another kind of energy that we sometimes overlook:
the energy of memory.
The crystal may not physically contain the memory.
But holding it can bring the memory back.
That experience can be incredibly powerful.
The Silent Language of Crystals
This idea of crystals carrying meaning, memory and personal association is something I explore more deeply in my book:
The Silent Language of Crystals: Energy, Memory, and the Echo of Spirit
The book explores the relationship we develop with crystals and the ways in which they can become more than simply beautiful objects.
Sometimes a crystal seems to speak without words.
Not necessarily because it is literally communicating with us, but because it can become a focus for memory, intention, emotion and spiritual reflection.
It is a subject that sits comfortably in the space between the physical world and our personal experience of it.

[Explore The Silent Language of Crystals]
So, can crystals really affect our energy?
The most honest answer is:
We don't currently have scientific evidence demonstrating that healing crystals directly alter the body's energy in the way often claimed.
But that doesn't mean that nothing happens when we work with them.
Crystals can influence our attention.
They can become associated with particular intentions.
They can form part of meditation and ritual.
They can trigger memories.
They can provide a physical anchor for reflection.
They can encourage us to pause.
And our expectations and beliefs can influence our experience.
For those who work with crystals spiritually, there may also be an energetic dimension that they experience personally and describe through the language of vibration, resonance and energy.
Science has not established that as a physical mechanism.
But neither does science need to prevent us from exploring the experience thoughtfully.
A simple crystal energy experiment
If you would like to explore this for yourself, try a small experiment.
Choose a crystal you know very little about.
Don't look up its traditional meaning beforehand.
Sit somewhere quiet and hold it for five minutes.
Notice everything you can.
How does it feel?
What do you notice physically?
What thoughts arise?
Does your attention change?
How do you feel when the five minutes are over?
Write down your observations.
Then research the traditional meanings associated with the crystal.
Now repeat the exercise on another day.
Compare the two experiences.
You may find that the crystal feels exactly as it did before.
You may find that your interpretation changes.
Or you may discover something entirely unexpected.
There is no right answer.
The point is simply to become curious about your own experience.
The mystery remains
Perhaps the most interesting conclusion is that we don't have to choose between science and spirituality.
We can recognise that crystals are physical objects with measurable properties.
We can appreciate what science has established about vibration, resonance, electricity and the structure of minerals.
We can also acknowledge that human beings experience crystals through attention, emotion, memory, expectation and meaning.
And for those who work within a spiritual tradition, we can remain open to the possibility that there are aspects of the experience that we do not yet fully understand.
The important thing is to remain curious without turning uncertainty into certainty.
Because there is something wonderful about saying:
“We don't know yet.”
It leaves the door open.
What energy do you bring to the crystal?
Perhaps the question we began with deserves to be turned around.
Instead of asking only:
“Can this crystal affect my energy?”
we might also ask:
“What energy, intention and attention am I bringing to this crystal?”
Perhaps the relationship works both ways.
The crystal gives us something tangible to hold.
We give it meaning.
We establish an intention.
We create a ritual.
We return to it repeatedly.
And over time, the crystal can become a quiet reminder of the person we are trying to become.
Maybe that is part of the silent language of crystals.
Not a language that needs to be proven or disproven.
But one that is experienced.
One that is personal.
And one that, for many people, has been speaking quietly for a very long time.
