Nunderite
When Nunderite was first introduced to the crystal community, it was described in early writings by the late Judy Hall as containing jadeite alongside feldspar. As many of you will know, Judy’s work opened the door to crystals for countless people, and her books played an important role in bringing lesser-known stones into wider awareness.
With the benefit of further geological review, it is now understood that this identification was a mistake. There is currently no verified mineralogical evidence that jadeite occurs in Nunderite, and jadeite itself has not been confirmed as naturally occurring in Australia.
Nunderite is instead regarded as a syenitic rock composed primarily of feldspar and dark pyroxene minerals such as aegirine.
Crystal knowledge continues to evolve, and as new information becomes available, it is important to honour both the pioneers who first shared these stones with us and the science that helps us understand them more accurately today.
