Stony-irons are exceptionally rare, making up less than 2% of all known meteorites.

The Imilac strewn field was first discovered by Westerners in 1822, and is situated in the Atacama Desert of Chile. The Atacama is said to be the second driest expanse in the world (antarctica being the driest), and is exceptionally barren. It is situated on the sheltered side of Chile's coastal mountain range. The rain gauge at Calama has reportedly never received any measurable rainfall. The Atacama is a high desert with many areas over 8000 feet in altitude. This makes it a very cold desert with average temperatures ranging from 0° to 25

It was in 1822 that prospectors discovered several large masses of the Imilac pallasite sitting in shallow crash pits. They also found a dense strewnfield containing thousands of small pieces in close vicinity. The surface of the Imilac meteorites showed extensive weathering, suggesting that this was an old fall.

The high Atacama Desert is one of the driest and most desolate places on Earth. NASA tested an early prototype of the Mars rover there because the terrain was the closest match available for the Red Planet.
